January 26: When in doubt, Open the Door And Invite Peace In

Affirmation: Choose to be resilient. Move from competition to collaboration.

Ponder, Personalize and Practice:

Jot this verse down in your journal, on a note card or sticky note. Remind yourself as you go through the day about what wisdom from God looks like. Be deliberate about what wisdom you are looking for and listening to.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.“

When in doubt, Open the Door And Invite Peace In
Jesus came instead among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” John 20:21
Have you noticed that after Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to people several times, often greeting them by saying “Peace be with you?” If Jesus showed up in a room with me like He did with some of His followers, I might need to change my toga, and yet He brought calm to the most startling of circumstances.

The first time Jesus appeared to His disciples, Thomas wasn’t with them. Then He appeared a second time when Thomas was in the room. Jesus wanted even that guy whose nickname was “the doubter” to experience peace. Maybe that’s you today and you’ve got a little Thomas in you. God is more than OK with that; He wants to bring His peace to your honest doubts.

Jesus often talked about His “shalom” or His “peace” resting on people and places. Shalom is more than a polite greeting or a parting comment. It is God’s eternal and mysterious peace. How can we experience the kind of peace Jesus talked about today? First, we need to know what peace actually is.

Peace is not something that happens externally; it is an inside job. We can be in a crowded place, surrounded by many loud voices, and still feel totally peaceful. In the same way, we can be in a quiet, beautiful place and not feel any peace at all. Peace arrives, or escapes based on our state of mind. So if we want to experience, Jesus‘s peace, we need to be intentional about what we’re focusing on, whether we are hanging onto His love moment by moment or spiraling into negative “what if” thoughts.

Whether it is a relationship that needs repair or a decision that feels daunting, go back to Jesus, a second time like Jesus did for Thomas. Leave the door ajar for Jesus to enter every room in your life and every decision that needs to be made with His peace. Peace be with you in this important work; may His shalom be upon you and with you as you invite Jesus into your doubting places.

If you are feeling distracted or anxious today, get real and be honest with God.
