You Will Be Remembered 

For Your Love Not Your Opinions 

A wise man will hear an increase learning, and a man of understanding will obtain wise counsel. 

Proverbs 1:5NKJV.

I’m a lawyer. I get paid to have opinions, and I have hundreds of them. I have opinions about things I know a lot about and opinions about things I know very little about. The hard truth is no matter how confident I am, many of my opinions, have proven to be misplaced overtime.

It’s easy to confuse those opinions, emerging from our hopes or imaginations with those born of truth and supported by our experience. While there is no shame in telling people what you imagine might be a good idea, don’t confuse your gut reactions with a well-formed, trustworthy, truth-based, and experience-based opinion.

If someone is suffering, deep grief, or sadness, it would be a kindness to say, “This must be such a painful time for you,” rather than, “I know exactly how you feel.” Get real with yourself and with the people around you. Talk about what you know to be true rather than what you think might be true, and people will trust you more when it really counts.

Wise people are easy to identify, because they usually won’t bring a boatload of opinions into conversations. They will talk about their lives, their experiences, and their faith. And they won’t just talk about what they think God’s position is on a topic, they will point it out in scripture so you can be sure. The only thing as good as finding wise counsel is being a person of wise counsel. And every new day is an opportunity to try out for that part.
