Ponder, Personalize, Practice:

As you are memorizing these 8 verses, remind yourself of God’s presence day and night. Perhaps there is someone in your circles who needs the encouragement that comes from these verses.

-Douglas has kept these verses in his memory for the last 60 + years. He has prayed them with hundreds of people and God has been faithful every time.

”I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.“

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭121‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Breaking Up Can Be For The Best
Now the Lord is the spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Two Corinthians 3:17

Did you know the declaration of independence is only 36 sentences long? Isn’t that awesome? Think about it. We broke up with an entire country and started a new one in fewer sentences than there are in one of my shortest devotional messages. What if we took a queue from that document and reduced a few things that we feel large and overwhelming in our lives down to a more manageable size? If we did, I bet it would be easier to understand and then break up with some of what has been taking up too much space.

What do you need to break up with today? Maybe it’s a job. Sure, it was great the day you started, and may have been a perfect fit for who you were at the time, but, wonderfully, you have changed and, predictively, the job didn’t, or it didn’t change enough to keep up with who you turned into. Break up with it. I know it feels like a huge decision, but chunk up some of your hesitations into smaller pieces and it won’t feel so big. The people you love will still love you. If you have kids, they’re not going anywhere either. The sun is still going to rise in the morning, and God will still protect you. You won’t even need 36 sentences to pull off a perfect break up with your job. Perhaps you can communicate it in just two words and slip your boss a note: I quit.

It is not just careers; it can be other obstacles we allowed to get on our way. Is your big fear that you will be misunderstood? Is it an insatiable need for the approval and acceptance or Success or popularity this is tripping you up? If you find yourself self paralyzed and your decision-making or constantly giving people too much agency over your life, it may be time for you to part ways with those habits.

When we break up with a few of the distractions that have been drowning everything out, we create a beautiful, quiet spot where God can meet us once again. Find that place.

Ask God what He wants you to leave behind as you continue your adventure with Him.
